GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Grand Rapids Police are close to completing interviews with first graders in class where a substitute teacher allegedly physically assaulted two students at River City Scholars Charter Academy, Lt. Patrick Merrill said on Wednesday, May 21.

According to Merrill, the Tuesday, May 12, incident involved two 6-year-old girls. He said the students reported being grabbed by their arms and dragged to their desks. One of the girls said her head was forced down on the desk.

He said it was a "time-out" type situation related to behavior that morning.

Merrill said once the personal interviews with staff and students wrap up, the results of their investigation will be turned over to the Kent County Prosecutor's Office.

But National Heritage Academies, which manages the the charter school, located at 944 Evergreen St., won't be using the substitute's services anymore.

"The substitute is not allowed to teach in River City Scholars or any other National Heritage Academies School," said Jennifer Hoff, senior manager of communications for NHA. "The substitute was from a vendor and is not a school employee."

River City Scholars serves 522 students in Young Fives kindergarten through sixth grade and is authorized by Bay Mills Community College.

"The school is working in full cooperation with local authorities as they investigate the matter," Hoff said.

Police are not releasing the name or gender of the substitute. NHA is not releasing the name of the vendor the substitute was hired from, or detailing how long he or she has worked in the district.
